Wedding photographers may dream of the perfect day, where everything falls into place, enabling them to take perfect photographs. It is just a dream but would go something like this :
I met the bride and groom a few times before the wedding and clearly understood their wishes and their personalities and these were reflected in the photographs.
I went to the wedding rehearsal and understood what the vicar / officials would allow regarding photographing the wedding.
We did a pre-wedding shoot at the church and at the reception location and this put the bride and groom at their ease in front of the camera.
As a result of previous meetings and discussions, I was considered as a trusted friend by the bride and groom and not just another supplier.
The bride’s dressing room was spacious and allowed me to move around for photographs.
There was a large window facing north in the bride’s dressing room that allowed in plenty of natural light. (North facing gives good but not excessive light as in east or west facing).

Your dressing room should have plenty of space for you and your helpers.
The room should have plenty of natural light coming in from the window.
If the room is not too well lit then use small table lamps and Christmas tree lights for added effect. Do not use candles as these can be dangerous in a dressing room.
Use table lamps rather than overhead room lights for a more romantic effect.
Remove anything from the room that you would not want to have in your photographs.
Take out any boxes that have been used for wedding dress, shoes etc.
Clear the floor of anything not directly related to your wedding, including those discarded jeans in the corner, shoes, store bags and boxes.
Put any flowers that you have been sent, into vases rather than leaving them in their paper.
Place around the room anything of special meaning or sentimental value to you. The photographer will take pictures of anything of interest and anything that could be important to the bride and groom.

A journalist is a story teller and a photographer takes pictures. The role of the wedding photojournalist is to tell the story of your day through pictures that will bring back the emotional memories and feelings of the day.
A photojournalist captures actions, people doing things, and this requires constant diligence and eyes everywhere, and especially on the bride and groom.
The photojournalist will be in the background, unobtrusive but aware of the key moments, capturing un-posed, unique images.
The photojournalist will not attempt to control the proceedings but will record the flow.
With this philosophy and work ethic, the photographs for every wedding will be completely different and unique.
A photojournalist will take the minimum of posed pictures, as requested by the bride and groom.
A sense of composition and timing is essential for the photojournalist.

Bride Makeup
Avoid a “new look” on your wedding day. Your groom may not recognise you !
Make sure your make-up reflects you and what you want.
Practice your make-up a few times before hand. Note how long it takes you and build this timing into your plan for the day.
If a make-up artist is applying makeup for you and your bridesmaids, then have a practise for all and build the timings into the plan for the day.
Remember to take what you need to touch up your make-up during the day, perhaps a bridesmaid could help with this.
Foundation and powder will prevent a shine on your face in photographs.
That is all I can think of but then I’m only a man so how would I know !
If you have any other suggestions then please email them to me and I will include them in this hints list

Reception Disco
For photos of the first dance, avoid large flashing, circulating disco lights as they make it impossible to get a balanced photo on the dance floor.
Talk to the DJ and ask them to turn off any such lights, just during the first dance

Party Band
I had the good fortune to photograph a 60th birthday party on 23rd October.
The entertainment was a band called Breeze, a group of young musicians in the true sense who played anything from soul, to Pink Floyd, to Status Quo to Lynyrd Skynyrd and back again.
I was impressed by the technical brilliance of the two guitar players, who swapped between lead and playing bass guitar, the keyboard player who also played guitar when required, and rock steady drummer.
Vocal were clear with harmonies accurate and complete. I was also impressed by their ability to play any request from the party goers.
Well worth booking or going to see.

For group shots, stand 45 degrees to camera and put weight on back leg.
Gentlemen should ensure shirt cuffs are pulled out below jacket sleeves. This makes for a much better picture.
Ladies hats must not hide their eyes, so heads up.
For the bride and groom, when asked to kiss, don’t pucker your lips. Stop just before contact is made. That’s the most romantic picture…the moment of anticipation.
